In the novel 'Big Brother' is basically the government. I think that 'Big Brother' actually exist today in the United States. Just not how it is in the book. In the novel 'Big Brother' controlled almost everything. Our government doesn't. We can have an opinion if we like the government or not without having serious consequences. The people in the novel however had no type of freedom. At least that what I think. The fact that they seem to have people undercover is crazy.
I think our society has no privacy. Well I wouldn't say absolutely none. Take the internet for example. Most people post everything on there. They post their thoughts, to what's going on with their lives, and even how they feel about certain things. Everything you put online isn't going to go away. Even after you delete it. All these personal and private things. . . .now on the internet. Or how about the whole tapping into our phones. I've heard it mentioned that the government can tap into our phone conversations and see us through satellites. I remember going to see the movie 'Colombiana' and i saw how the government tapped into phones and could tell where people were just like that. . . .that quick. I know its just a movie but still I think it holds some truth.
So no I don't think we have complete privacy in our society. As far as tapping into phone lines and finding where our locations are. . . .it can actually be useful to find people who's on the run from the law. So at the end of the day there is SOME good to it. But still I would want my privacy. I don't wanna be talking on the phone to someone and wondering if someone's listening to my conversation. Its just weird to me.
I had similar thoughts in my blog. I could be wrong on this, but generally speaking i believe that government isn't randomly tapping into phone lines to hear our conversations. I think it is more of a trap for sleezy politicians who are suspected of a crime and already proof has been established, but more is needed to actually nail the person.. or something to that effect. I feel the same however, i don't want people 'tapping' into my life whenever i they feel like it, its unnerving to think that maybe someone is watching our every move. I do know for a fact if someone is on disability and the government suspects they are not disabled that they will watch their home, and anywhere they may go to disprove their claim..which in a way is good, because then our tax dollars are not being misused. It's still pretty unsettling to me though.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it matters who they really are tapping into. The fact of the matter is they could tap into our phones if they wanted to and they wouldn't have to provide any reason for doing so, not only because they aren't recquired to but because you'll never know. There is a large difference between our society and the novel but there certainly are similarities.
ReplyDeleteCould it be said that we only have as much privacy as the government has decided we should have? Isn't this exactly what has happened in the novel? Our government has merely decided that they don't need to restrict our privacy so much in order to keep us in control.
I agree that in some ways we don't have a lot of privacy but compared to the 1984 we are really what I considered free. We have a lot of chance for privacy. It is definitely scary to think that the government can "tap" into things whenever they want. I think there is a lot of things the government does not tell us and I think that they have more control over the amount of privacy we have that we think do.
ReplyDeleteI think you bring up a valid point by saying that there are benefits to the government being able to find us if there is a crisis. It's scary to know that they can find out what we have done on the internet and what we say on our phone calls.. but the way I look at it is if we have nothing to hide, what's wrong with them just trying to rid the united states from terrorists?
