Blog #7

I can't deny how much I like reality tv shows.I watch them almost everyday. . .but different ones of course. There's so many different ones out there from Real World, Jersey Shore, and even Keeping up with the Kardashians. The most recent dose of reality tv I've watched was The Bad Girls Club. For the people who don't know about the show it centers on seven mischievous and rebellious women from different backgrounds and personalities who are introduced to the show to change their pernicious behavior and accomplish specific goals. To sum it all up. . . .its about who can stay in the house the longest without getting into a fight or by not quitting.
So why would I watch something like this? To be honestly I still can't pinpoint it. I think its just entertaining because I'm not like them. I don't get into fights as easily and I can control my temper. Knowing that they can't and they try to, makes it interesting for me because its a chance to see how others might do it too. Even though yeah. . .the fights that go on can become entertaining as well. I think its the fact that I can connect with each person on the show and be like, 'yeah if she did that i would of reacted that way too!' or 'it wasn't that serious for her to punch the girl like that.'
I've noticed as time passes that there's starting to be less scripted shows and more reality shows. Which to me is unfortunate. Even though I like the excitement of most reality shows of not knowing what's going to happen next, I wouldn't want scripted shows to disappear. As much as I like reality tv I know its not good for younger generations because they look up to some of these reality stars. Yes I know that they didn't ask to become role models but some of them have to accept that fact that they are.
Enough with my small rant and going off topic for a sec. I think my role and anyone's else role as a viewer to these shows is simply. To view and talk about it. We watch reality tv and most of the time we talk about them afterwards to friend or family. We also tweet about it, or even talk about it on facebook. The more we do that, the more the ratings go up, and the more it continues. That's our role.

  1. I agree that we do play a role in the ratings; i never really thought about it in the way you mentioned (tweeting, facebooking, etc.). As viewers we do have a lot of control in whether the show makes it or not, but ultimately i feel that we are just acting exactly as they want us to. They know what will excite us and market towards that.

  2. I agree that our role is to watch the show, talk about it with our friends, and make the ratings go up. All the producers want to do is to give us something to talk about so that other people will hear about the show and then watch it the next week. I don't think that the producers intentionally try to create role models. I think it's up to the person and if they are going to allow these characters to influence them.

  3. I agree with you when you say you think there should be more scripted shows, I personally like them better, I don't really like reality shows.I also agree that producers want us to talk about and use just things as facebook to dicuss their shows, I don't think it is planned but I think it is a plus for them. I think you got the part about our role exactly right, our role is to view the show and talk about it.

  4. I agree with you when you state that our role as the viewer is to talk about the show. Whether we tweet, post, or talk, we are spreading the word of the show, probably increasing the amount of viewers if we give positive feedback. The more racy or dramatic the show; the more likely we are to tell our friends about it, then the ratings will go up.
But I mean let's be honest, we have all seen a reality show, and we have all enjoyed at least one episode. You either laughed, cried, or were disgusted by the actions that were on the screen.
